Annecy is a city of about 125,000 people in the French Alps, sitting at the northern tip of Lake Annecy, roughly 35 km south of Geneva. The lake is often called the cleanest in Europe — strict environmental regulations since the 1960s have kept the water so clear that you can see the bottom in depths of several metres. The old town, built along the canals of the Thiou river where it flows out of the lake, has a postcard quality that is both genuine and slightly unreal: pastel-coloured houses lean over the water, flowers cascade from window boxes, and the medieval Palais de l'Isle sits on a triangular island in the middle of the canal like a stone ship. The old town is compact and best explored on foot. The Chateau d'Annecy, a restored medieval castle above the old streets, houses a regional museum and offers views over the rooftops to the lake and mountains. The lakefront promenade, the Jardins de l'Europe, and the Pont des Amours (Lovers' Bridge) connect the old town to the parkland along the shore. On Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings, a large market fills the streets around the town hall with local cheese (Reblochon, Tome des Bauges, Abondance), charcuterie, bread, and produce from the surrounding farms. Lake Annecy is 14 km long and surrounded by mountains, and it dominates life in the city during the warmer months. Swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and sailing are all popular from the public beaches along the eastern and western shores. A paved cycling and walking path runs most of the way around the lake — about 40 km for the full loop — and is one of the best lakeside rides anywhere in the Alps. Paragliding from the Col de la Forclaz on the eastern shore, with a landing on the lakeshore, is a major activity. In winter, the Semnoz ski area rises directly above the city. Annecy has a train station with TGV services to Paris (about 3 hours 40 minutes) and regional trains to Chambery, Lyon, and Geneva. Geneva airport, the nearest major airport, is about 45 km north and connected by bus. By car, Annecy is on the A41 motorway between Geneva and Chambery. The city centre is largely pedestrianized, and the lakeside paths make cycling a practical option. Parking garages in the centre fill quickly on summer weekends. Day trips from Annecy are oriented toward the mountains. Chamonix and Mont Blanc are about 100 km east, reachable in under two hours. The Aravis mountain range, with the Col des Aravis pass and the Grand-Bornand and La Clusaz ski resorts, is about 30 km east. Chambery, the former capital of Savoy, is 50 km south with its castle and old town. Geneva, across the Swiss border, offers museums, the UN quarter, and the lake jet d'eau. The Bauges Regional Natural Park, south of the lake, has quieter hiking trails and traditional Alpine villages.
